Two of the most original and authentic brands we offer is a duo from Vancouver, Canada. Two different brands but created by the same man: Homespun Knitwear and National Athletic Goods. Both brands are very interesting and strictly focused on a very specific piece of garment. Let's talk about Homespun now. You can read more about National Athletic Goods HERE.
The brand was launched in 2009 in Vancouver and it is a collection of men’s knit tops inspired by early 20th Century working men’s undershirts with a traditional slim fit. This focus on a very specific piece of garment probably brings the highest quality level you can find. We like that fact very much, obviously. There are not many brands in the whole world which could be compared with the level of details or the fabric used. Now we offer just a couple of pieces but based on the very positive feedback from customers we will be soon ready to offer you much more.
Darrin, the owner of Standard Design (owner of both mentioned brands), will shortly explain why he launched Homespun Knitwear. We do understand and we really appreciate that we can show this amazing stuff to you. You can check our selection HERE. In case of any questions, please let us know.
Homespun Knitwear:
"The Homespun Knitwear brand is based on my archived collection of early
20th century men's undershirts . I've been collecting them for over 10 years
with an archive of several hundred used vintage samples from various makers
in Canada & the USA & a hundred or so more unused deadstock examples .
I'm fascinated with the subtle differences in the knit fabrics used of this era &
the great details designed into these garments that were originally intended
to be worn as an under layer rarely to be seen by anyone but the wearer .
Fine quality undergarments were considered a staple menswear item in the
late 1800's & up until the 1940s & 50s .
Our knit fabrics for Homespun are all custom made for us at mills in Canada
& Japan and developed from samples in my archived collection . Some of
the yarns are even custom made for us as they haven't been commonly used
for 75 years or more . Some of the fabrics used in the early 1900s had subtle
imperfections & slubs in them which we try to recreate . Also, certain types
of multi color yarns that were commonly used in the 1930s ~ 50s have been
utilized to develop our knits & custom yarn colors created for us based on
those of that era .
We also focus on the small details like sewing construction, rare decorative
stitching done on vintage machines, trim fabrics & buttons that were present
on fine men's undergarments of that era to create our premium vintage
inspired knits .
Homespun Knitwear garments have been sought out by Hollywood costume
designers in need of early 20th Century & depression era men's undershirts &
have been featured in several American television & major movie productions
including Hell on Wheels, Ironman & the Hunger Games which have scenes
depicting these eras ."
